There are two theories to bush flying. One, go with a pilot who has never crashed, reasoning that they never--knock on wood, rub rabbit's foot, keep fingers crossed--will. Or two, go with an "experienced" pilot, one who has crashed and lived, because at least they know how to crash and survive.

He glances at the man beside him punching at the buttons of a mobile phone, his thumbs opposing an upsetting and urgent message. He looks down at his own thumbs, covered in tiny green cuts, his greatest nemesis a yard of weeds.
