He likes to listen to her read, his head restful in her lap. Last night, she caught their reflection. His jaw was tight. She stroked his head and asked if everything was fine. He blinked hard and sat up, pulling out his ponytail and scratching behind his ears. Was it cool if he took off, he'd said? Could he take the book, maybe some others?
